Stressed and exhausted? Step away from the edge.![]() Grade pressures, job demands, family responsibilities, competitive challenges, go-go schedules – the hits just keep on coming. Relentless bombardment can push anyone to the brink of burnout. According to mental health site Helpguide, burnout is more than just stress overload. "Burnout often occurs when life feels out of balance—you feel you are giving too much of yourself to your jobs or others and are constantly in a state of stress and anxiety without any time to relax and enjoy life." Symptoms of burnout include "emotional exhaustion and an increasingly negative attitude toward your work and, perhaps, your life." Do you have the know-how and resilience to respond successfully to life's challenges? Find out by taking Psychology Today's Coping Skills Test. This online quiz helps evaluate your strategies for dealing with pressure and also offers suggestions for building sound coping skills. A healthy lifestyle – good eating, sleeping and exercise habits – can help fight the physical effects of burnout. Combat emotional pressures by reminding yourself of these suggestions from Rowan University professor Morton Tener in the Black Enterprise article "Burned down to the wick": "Know that tribulations and pressures sometimes come with the territory. However you have the power to control how you react to them. Develop realistic goals before beginning new projects. Maintain a positive attitude. Flex your creativity. Realize that you can't please everyone all the time." And take care of yourself and each other, Angela Bischoff and Tooker Gomberg advise. In the Alternatives Journal piece "Ten Commandments for Changing the World", they recommend, "Maintain balance. Avoid burnout by delegating tasks, sharing responsibility, and maintaining an open process... Have fun. As much as possible, surround yourself with others (both at work and at play) who share your vision so you can build camaraderie, solidarity and support. Enjoy yourself, and nourish your sense of humour. Remember: you're not alone!"
